Download everything from Microsoft without WGA Check » gHacks tech news

When you want to download a file from Microsoft a WGA (windows genuine advantage) check is performed. Microsoft installs a small piece of software on your computer that contacts the Microsoft server and checks for validity. If the test fails you will not be able to download the file(s). The following method gives you the ability to download every file from Microsoft without a WGA check.

All you need is the tool mgadiag.exe and the download url of the file that you want to download. Mgadiag.exe is the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool. Start this tool and check the value of the “Download Center Code”, this should be seven chars consisting of upper case letters and numbers. Remember that code and open the website of the file that you want to download.

A download page looks similar to this one for Internet Explorer 7. All you need to do is append the following value to the url and you will be able to download the file without a WGA check.

&Hash=”download center code”

Replace the “download center code” with the code that you looked up in the mgadiag.exe tool. This code changes frequently, make sure you have the correct code before starting the downloads.

To sum it up for the lazy ones:

1. download mgadiag.exe
2. start mgadiag.exe and look at the download center code
3. visit a download page at microsoft.com
4. append &Hash=”download center code” to the url
5. Hit enter

Microsoft is probably going to fix this soon, it is working nevertheless at the moment.

Backup or Restore Windows XP without new activation

You have thirty days to activate a new installation of Microsoft Windows XP before it stops working until you finally activated the installation. Activation works this way that you have to provide an installation number to Microsoft either by internet or by phone. If you change hardware or install the operating system again you will have to activate the product again as well. This does not make sense in my opinion but hey, they surely have an important reason for this procedure.

Now as I said earlier there is a way to reinstall Windows XP without having to activate the product again. Windows XP creates two files when the activation process was successful: wpa.dbl and Wpa.bak - those two files are normally located in your system32 folder of your windows installation. You need to back them up because they hold the information that Windows is already active.

Install Windows XP again or use a backup. After that is finished and you see that Windows is not activated start Windows in minimal safe mode. Navigate to the system32 directory and rename the files wpa.dbl and Wpa.bak to something else, for example wpa2.dbl and Wpa2.bak.

Now copy your backed up wpa.dbl and Wpa.bak into the folder, reboot windows and you will realize that Windows is again activated. This only works of course if you do not change relevant hardware like the motherboard for instance. If that is the case you will have to activate Windows again.

Free Answers from Experts-Exchange.com » gHacks tech news

You might have stumbled upon this site if you ever had a computer related question that you could not answer. First step, ask google. Second step, find websites that force you to login or even pay to see the answer. Big thanks to eonestudio for making this little trick public. The above link displays a video which shows how you can take a look at the answers for free.

All you need to do is the following. Search for something, e.g. printing from a website, the search string you would enter would look like the following.

printing from a website site:experts-exchange.com

Please note that it is not neccessary to use the site:experts-exchange.com parameter, this is only done for demonstration purposes.

The first search result will link directly to the experts-exchange.com article with no solution but a button stating View Solution. If you click that button you see that you will have to subscribe to view the solution. Not today though.

Go back to the google results page and click on Cached which loads a cached version of that webpage. Guess what ? The cached page holds all the answers to the question right at the bottom. Just scroll down and see for yourself.

Hello, I'm A Windows XP OSX

Since the first time I look at my friend's Mac Pro, I been wishing that one day I can use OSX on my computer. Now its a dream comes true :)

Hello, I'm A Windows XP OSX: "
I've always had a secret desire to own a Mac. Of course, I didn't do anything to get one, but today I've made my first step: I've installed FlyakiteOSX, which is an application that transforms Windows XP in a Mac OSX. Like magic. The package is more than a simple skin, it makes subtle changes:

* Command Console looks like the Terminal
* every folder can have a different color
* Spotlight clone with Google Desktop
* new effects for icons and folders
* shadows for windows and taskbar
* new cursors, screen savers, boot screen, wallpaper, Jaguar sounds
* new look for Internet Explorer, Outlook Explorer, Office

If you go to the site, you'll see a small version of an online Mac OSX desktop. The setup has about 30MB, but the result is a beautiful new operating system that makes your work on your computer more enjoyable.

Hot Ice Cream Comes With a Warning

This ice cream comes with an unusual stipulation - customers must sign a waiver before tasting it because it's so hot.

Cold Sweat, a flavor sold at ice cream shop Sunni Sky's, is made with three kinds of pepper and two kinds of hot sauce.

'It tastes like fire - with a side of fire,' said Scott McCallum, a regular customer, who was eating the more sedate butter pecan flavor.

'I thought it was a cool idea, but I didn't think he'd make it that hot,' McCallum said of proprietor Scott Wilson.

Wilson started out experimenting with jalapenos in vanilla ice cream to appeal to Hispanic customers - which was unsuccessful - and worked his way up to Cold Sweat.

The waiver for the fiery mixture has dozens of signatures. Pregnant women and people with health problems are not supposed to eat it. Anyone younger than 18 needs the consent of a guardian.

Among the first to try Cold Sweat was Justin Smith, 22, an Angier woodworker. He went to the restroom and vomited after a spoonful.

He's had about five samples since, and wants to go for the record of 14 ounces in a sitting.

'It's got a good flavor,' Smith said. 'As someone who really likes hot stuff and doesn't mind being scorched, I can taste the difference, and it really does taste good.'

If he doesn't get the record soon, he might not get a chance. Wilson isn't sure he'll make another batch after the current supply runs out."

Download Torrent at 100 Mbs

Worried about the RIAA or MPAA tracking your BitTorrent activity? Wish you could share back to the community, but afraid of being caught?

A shell free service called Silence is Defeat is offering the ability to use their 100Mbit full duplex connection to download any torrent you want. Since their connection is full-duplex and uncapped, torrents will download faster, and you can seed your downloaded torrents without giving away your IP address!

Here's how it works:

1. Sign up for a free shell at http://silenceisdefeat.org/ Instant lifetime activation through PayPal costs $1, or you can sign up for free via postal mail.
2. Use an SSH client like PuTTY to connect to your new shell account.
3. At the shell prompt, simply type 'bt ' and then the URL of the turrent you want to download. Don't use quotes. For example, bt http://example.com/thistorrent.torrent. Your turrent will nearly instantly download at incredible speeds. And the curses (simi-graphical) output will give you a readout of the progress. Once it's downloaded, you'll begin sharing, but the IP you're sharing from will be the IP of Silence is Defeat's server, not the IP of your home computer.
4. Download the file from SD and enjoy! I prefer an SFTP client like WinSCP, but you could just navigate to your public_html directory (type 'cd publich_html' without quotes when you first connect to the shell prompt) and then download the torrent'd file at http://silenceisdefeat.org/~yourusername/ instead, which may be easier for those who don't want to use an SFTP client.

If you need any help, simply join #sd on irc.freenode.org - those guys are always very willing to help, no matter what the problem is.

Oh, and your SSH and SFTP traffic is completely encrypted, so not even your ISP will know what you're doing, and Silence is Defeat doesn't log your activity!

Google Tips and Tricks

This article is not written by me. Got it somewhere from Internet. Credits to whoever written it.

Advanced Google Tips

Google has quickly become one of the most well known words in the world and is used by millions daily, including myself. In an advanced database class back in university, we spent a couple of weeks studying the inner workings of search engines, and one topic which happened to come up was data mining using Google. Much to my surprise, out of a class of 80 fourth year computer engineers maybe four or five knew how to use Google to perform any sort of advanced queries.

Google (and many other search engines) has the ability not only to search on keywords, but also using a more “database-ish” query language to really narrow down your search results. Below is a summary of a few of the most useful lesser known features. Note: in the examples, replace cwire.org with your own domain.

Basic Usage:

  • Use quotation marks ” “ to locate an entire string.
eg. “bill gates conference” will only return results with that exact string.
  • Mark essential words with a +
If a search term must contain certain words or phrases, mark it with a + symbol. eg: +”bill gates” conference will return all results containing “bill gates” but not necessarily those pertaining to a conference
  • Negate unwanted words with a -
You may wish to search for the term bass, pertaining to the fish and be returned a list of music links as well. To narrow down your search a bit more, try: bass -music. This will return all results with “bass” and NOT “music”.

General Tips: (I use many of these almost on a daily basis)

  • site:www.cwire.org
This will search only pages which reside on this domain.
  • related:www.cwire.org
This will display all pages which Google finds to be related to your URL
  • link:www.cwire.org
This will display a list of all pages which Google has found to be linking to your site. Useful to see how popular your site is
  • spell:word
Runs a spell check on your word
  • define:word
Returns the definition of the word
  • stocks: [symbol, symbol, etc]
Returns stock information. eg. stock: msft
  • maps:
    A shortcut to Google Maps
  • phone: name_here
Attempts to lookup the phone number for a given name
  • cache:
If you include other words in the query, Google will highlight those words within the cached document. For instance, cache:www.cwire.org web will show the cached content with the word “web” highlighted.
  • info:
The query [info:] will present some information that Google has about that web page. For instance, info:www.cwire.org will show information about the CyberWyre homepage. Note there can be no space between the “info:” and the web page url.
  • weather:
Used to find the weather in a particular city. eg. weather: new york

Advanced Tips:

  • filetype:
Does a search for a specific file type, or, if you put a minus sign (-) in front of it, it won’t list any results with that filetype. Try it with .mp3, .mpg or .avi if you like.
  • daterange:
Is supported in Julian date format only. 2452384 is an example of a Julian date.
  • allinurl:
If you start a query with [allinurl:], Google will restrict the results to those with all of the query words in the url. For instance, [allinurl: google search] will return only documents that have both “google” and “search” in the url.
  • inurl:
If you include [inurl:] in your query, Google will restrict the results to documents containing that word in the url. For instance, [inurl:google search] will return documents that mention the word “google” in their url, and mention the word “search” anywhere in the document (url or no). Note there can be no space between the “inurl:” and the following word.
  • allintitle:
If you start a query with [allintitle:], Google will restrict the results to those with all of the query words in the title. For instance, [allintitle: google search] will return only documents that have both “google” and “search” in the title.
  • intitle:
If you include [intitle:] in your query, Google will restrict the results to documents containing that word in the title. For instance, [intitle:google search] will return documents that mention the word “google” in their title, and mention the word “search” anywhere in the document (title or no). Note there can be no space between the “intitle:” and the following word.
  • allinlinks:
Searches only within links, not text or title.
  • allintext:
Searches only within text of pages, but not in the links or page title.
  • bphonebook:
If you start your query with bphonebook:, Google shows U.S. business white page listings for the query terms you specify. For example, [ bphonebook: google mountain view ] will show the phonebook listing for Google in Mountain View.
  • phonebook:
If you start your query with phonebook:, Google shows all U.S. white page listings for the query terms you specify. For example, [ phonebook: Krispy Kreme Mountain View ] will show the phonebook listing of Krispy Kreme donut shops in Mountain View.
  • rphonebook:
If you start your query with rphonebook:, Google shows U.S. residential white page listings for the query terms you specify. For example, [ rphonebook: John Doe New York ] will show the phonebook listings for John Doe in New York (city or state). Abbreviations like [ rphonebook: John Doe NY ] generally also work.

Putting it all Together:

Now it’s time to start to get creative with our search terms and really narrow down our results. Now that we have the basics, let’s start to combine them all into one search term.

Example #1: Search for some MP3s
Let’s say you’re a Beatles fan and want to see if you can find some of their songs on the Internet without using Kazaa, etc. Try this query:

“index of” + “mp3″ + “beatles” -html -htm -php
or you could try this query:
* “index of/mp3″ -playlist -html -lyrics beatles

Right away on the first few results returned by Google you can download MP3s.

Example #2: Mixing some techniques together

Here’s a simple exercise. We’ll mix around a few terms to get more accurate results. Let’s say we want to research sleep recommendations. One assumption could be that research papers on this topic would most likely be on an educational website — perhaps with a .edu domain. We could try this query:

sleep recommendations site:edu

Maybe we’re in my situation, and am thinking of applying to grad school. Let’s see if we can find the Graduate Studies Admissions Requirements at the University of Toronto. We could try this query:

grad school admission requirements site:utoronto.ca

Summary:

After reading this article, you might be thinking “well, I could probably find those results without remembering these advanced search terms”. Well, the truth is that you probably could. The reason you want to start to use these advanced search tips is because they will help you find what you’re looking for faster. They greatly help narrow down the results, and more often than not, the information you were looking for will be in the first two or three results.

Rapidshare Tips & Tricks (rapidshare.de) | Megaupload Account

This article has tips on how to beat Rapidshare time limit, get a free premium Rapidshare account password, search rapidshare and Download multiples files using Rapidshare grabber script. Feature tricks to resume broken downloads with Rapidshare download manager.

Free unlimited large file hosting services like rapidshare de, yousendit and megaupload let you share and transfer big files on the internet. If a file is too large to send as an email attachment, just upload it to any of these sites and email the link to the recipient.

You can upload large files be it music videos (dat, flv, wmv, avi, mpeg, 3gp), audio files, mp3 songs, games, software (iso, rar, zip), cell phone ring tones, ebooks (pdf, chm, hlp), photos, Microsoft Office documents, CAD drawings, PDF documents, bookmarks and even retail software installers (exe msi) files. Send files of any type and of any size to people who are on a network that doesn't allow large e-mail files.

Quick File Sharing Hack: All these services allow only single files to be sent at a time. If you have more than one file to send, just zip them into an archive using Winzip or any other compression utility.

RapidShare

http://anonym.to/?http://s8.yousend...83E2C899DB721

Unlimited downloads from Yousendit

The YouSendIt link looks like the one below:
http://s12.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=46FK4...82KLDFS78D

See the letter "d" after "yousendit.com/" ? Change that letter "d" to an "e" and the link will never die. The d.aspx has the counter on. if it finds there has been more than 25 hits then it refers the user to expired.aspx otherwise it refers you to e.aspx. e.aspx has the download link and does not add any more hits. the link may stay for longer but will not eliminate the 7 day period.

Good tips for those who use computer a lot

Don't ignore any pain if you are spending most of your day infront of the computer screen. Else, it may be possible that you would lose the ability to tell hot from cold, find yourself dropping things or develop a syndrome known as "foot drop," in which pressure on the sciatic nerve can cause a foot to drag while you walk.

If you have had aching any place - lower back, upper back, between the shoulder blades, wrists or hands - for three days, you need to have it looked at.

ExtremeTech story - The Perils of PC Posture - has some good suggestions for "computer workers" to save themselves from a lifetime of aching backs and sore necks - "Get your butt out of the chair as much as possible. You can talk on phone while standing; you can stand to read a document."

"If you do shoulder rolls or simple stretches every 20-30 minutes and walk around for five minutes every hour, you keep your perspective fresh and your mind active. In the end, you'll be more productive."

Lunch with Buffett: Current bid is $455,100

As everyone already know, Warren Buffett is the most successful investor in the history. He is holding a record that easily beat every Wallstreet geek down to their panties :P. Now he is running his annual charity lunch on eBay. Not even 12 hours into the charity auction for lunch with Warren Buffett and bidding has already reached almost half a million dollars, beating last year's winning bid of $351,100.

And we still have six and half days left in the auction!

I don't know if I can take the excitement. I wish they had just put a Buy it Now option for, oh, say, $1,000,000 and we would have been done with it.

Bill Gates admitted that he watched pirated movies

Microsoft supremo and the World's Richest Man, Bill Gates, has no plans to create a YouTube clone due to issues associated with copyright violations but he himself watches pirated video clips of movies hosted on YouTube.

In an interview with Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher of Wall Street Journal, Bill Gates admitted to watching pirated movies on the Internet. Here are some excerpts from the interview posted on AOL News:

MR. MOSSBERG: Talk about YouTube. What do you think about that? Why aren't you doing something like that?

MR. GATES: If we did YouTube, we'd be in a lot of trouble. First of all, people would say, "How do you make money?" Second, they'd say, what about all that copyright violation taking place up there. It's a neat site. I saw a bunch of old Harlem Globetrotters movies up there the other night, it's great.

MS. SWISHER: You watch physics lectures and Harlem Globetrotters?

MR. GATES: This social-networking thing takes you to crazy places.

MS. SWISHER: But those were stolen, correct?

MR. GATES: Stolen's a strong word. It's copyrighted content that the owner wasn't paid for. So yes.

This Bill Gates' quote deserves a mention on the Microsoft Software Piracy website.
